What is stress?

I have personally encountered stress numerous times in my life. For the longest time, I didn't know what it was. I would just feel tired, frustrated, and out of control. I noticed it most when I was concerned about my safety or financial stability, like when I lost my job during my first pregnancy. I started imagining the worst possible outcome such as not being able to provide for myself and my son. It seemed as if no one cared about what would happen to me as they continued on with their daily lives. I just wanted to cry, but not in front of anyone because I did not want people to think that I was weak. I held it all in and isolated myself from people. I became so focused on the horrible stories I was creating in my mind that I had no energy left to actually change my situation. And "when it rains, it pours." Life just kept dealing me challenge after challenge. It was as if I was attracting everything that I did not want.

Strategies to Tackle Stress

Stress can be a significant challenge that affects various aspects of our lives, both mentally and physically. However, it's important to recognize that we have the capability to address it proactively and emerge stronger. Whether you're seeking ways to manage your own stress or support someone else through their journey,

  1. Self-Awareness: Recognize your stress triggers and early warning signs.

  2. Mindfulness Practices: Incorporate mindfulness meditation or deep breathing exercises into your daily routine.

  3. Regular Exercise: Engage in physical activity to release endorphins and reduce stress.

  4. Healthy Nutrition: Fuel your body with a balanced diet to support overall well-being.

  5. Time Management: Organize your tasks, prioritize, and avoid overloading your schedule.

  • Set Boundaries: Clearly define work hours and avoid overcommitting. Be honest with yourself and others about what you can and cannot do. You only have so much time and energy. Think about where and how you want to use it. Protect your time so you can focus on what is most important to you.

For Organizations:

  • Wellness Programs: Establish wellness initiatives to promote employee mental and physical health. Ensure that they are aware of and understand how to use any available employee assistance programs. Your business success depends on their wellness.

  • Coaching Services: Offer coaching services provided by a certified professional to support employees to enhance their stress management skills. When you invest in your team, you expand your entire organization's potential for success.

  • Overall Support for Mental Health & Well-being: Create a supportive environment that encourages employees to seek help when needed. Encourage self-care at all levels so that leaders and employees have the skills, resources, and support to mind their wellness.
